"New Divide" is a single written by Linkin Park for Michael Bay's upcoming film Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The song will serve as the film's theme, and was released as a single on May 18th.

Background
Linkin Park's "What I've Done" was included on the first Transformers soundtrack and was featured in the film's trailer. [2] Mike Shinoda first alluded to "New Divide" on March 28, 2009, stating "We've been working on a new song in the past couple of weeks that has been a lot of fun. The backdrop for the song is built on layered, heavy synths and a sharp performance by [the band's drummer] Rob Bourdon."[3] On April 24, Shinoda revealed that they are working with successful music composer Hans Zimmer writing various interpolations of "New Divide" to serve as thematic elements for the film.[4] When discussing the Transformers sequel with Blabbermouth, Michael Bay said "I love Linkin Park... they really delivered with 'New Divide' — it's a great song that perfectly matches the film's intensity."[5] Parts of the intro were used in the final Transformers trailer. Upon the trailer's release, fans had speculated this being the new song because it matched Shinoda's description of it. Later, drummer Rob Bourdon spoke on the phone with owners of two Linkin Park fansites confirming the rumors of "New Divide" appearing in the trailer.

"New Divide" premiered on the Kevin and Bean's Cinco de la Tarde show on KROQ on May 18, 2009 at 3:43 EST, two minutes before the online debut. "New Divide" will be released on iTunes UK on May 31, 2009.

[edit] Music video
On May 14, Shinoda revealed that they are currently recording an accompanying music video for the song.[6] The video is set in an Egyptian cave and Mr. Hahn, the band's DJ, will be directing. When discussing the video, Shinoda stated "[Mr. Hahn's] planning on using a lot of really interesting cutting-edge visual techniques, blurring the line between our performance and some kind of digital/mechanical reality."[7] Chester Bennington confirmed that the video is related to the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie, saying on his blog, "Honestly, I don't know what's going on in the video. We're in a tomb rocking out and there's a huge dead Transformer."[8] The video will debut around the time of the single's release. The video was shot on location at Paramount Studios on May 13 and 14.

Chart performance
Less than 24 hours after being released, it shot to number one on the U.S. iTunes Top 100 Songs list, surpassing "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas which had been the most-downloaded song on iTunes for seven consecutive weeks.
